MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - West Virginia University finished 37th in the final Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, the second-best finish in school history.
Coupled with 2007-08’s school-best 30th-place finish and last year’s 50th-place finish, WVU has now finished in the Top 50 in three consecutive years for the first time.
The Mountaineers accumulated 610.75 points, ranking second among BIG EAST schools. Notre Dame, which does not play BIG EAST football, finished 27th overall. Louisville finished third among BIG EAST schools with a 41st-place finish. Rounding out the top 100 among BIG EAST schools were Villanova (51st), Syracuse (57th), Connecticut (62nd), St. John’s (67th), Georgetown (70th) and Rutgers (96th).
“I am pleased with our second-best finish in the Directors’ Cup standings,” says Director of Athletics Emeritus Ed Pastilong. “Our teams continue to have success, not only in competition, but in the classroom as well. This is a tribute to our student-athletes, coaches, support staff and fans.”
“This is a real tribute to Ed Pastilong and his leadership during his 21-year career,” says Director of Athletics Oliver Luck. “What a great way for Ed to go into emeritus status with the second-best finish in school history. This is a very strong trend with three consecutive Top 50 finishes and ranking among the top of the BIG EAST each year. Both Ed and I are extremely proud of the department and our athletic teams.”
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports.
