MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball coach Greg Van Zant has announced the individual player awards for the 2010 season.
Former shortstop Jedd Gyorko has been named the position player MVP after leading the Mountaineers in nearly every offensive category. Gyorko, who is a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award, batted .381 with a school-record 19 home runs, 57 RBIs, 28 doubles, 90 base hits, 71 runs scored and 177 total bases. He was recently named a first-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and has earned second-team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, Baseball America and the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Relievers Andy Altemus and Chris Enourato were named co-MVPs for the pitching staff. Altemus broke the single-season school record with 29 appearances, and tied Enourato for the team lead with six victories. Enourato finished his senior campaign with a 6-2 record and recorded a team-best 67 strikeouts.
Earning WVU Rookie MVP honors was left-handed pitcher Michael Twigg. The Berkeley Springs, W.Va., native finished 3-1 with a 5.44 ERA. He struck out 34 in 44.2 innings pitched and emerged as a reliable mid-week starter, failing to take a loss in any of his six mid-week starts during the regular season.
