MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the second consecutive year, former West Virginia University baseball player Jedd Gyorko has been named a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award, announced today by the College Baseball Foundation. The announcement was made at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb.
The Wallace Award, presented by Mizuno, will be presented in Lubbock, Texas, on July 2 as part of the College Baseball Awards Show. Joining Gyorko as the final candidates are Cal State Fullerton’s Christian Colon and George Mason’s Ryan Soares.
“These three finalists are each excellent representatives of the quality play exemplified by the Brooks Wallace Award,” said Kevin Dunagan, Wallace Award committee co-chair. “Brooks Wallace was an outstanding shortstop for Texas Tech and each of this year’s finalists were valuable members of their teams with quality statistics.”
Gyorko, a Morgantown native, finished his season with a .750 slugging percentage and a .973 fielding percentage. He hit 19 home runs and 28 doubles to go with a .381 batting average in 57 games.
Gyorko, who made his professional debut with the Eugene Emeralds at the short-season A level on Friday, is WVU’s career leader in batting average (.404), doubles (73), extra base-hits (113) and is tied for first-place in home runs (35).
The College Baseball Awards Show will take place on July 2 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of a nearly weeklong schedule of festivities sponsored by the College Baseball Foundation. The events also include the induction ceremony for the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.
