Asselin Earns All-America

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Senior Marie-Louise Asselin earned the seventh All-America honor of her career on Friday evening with a second-place showing in the 5,000-meter race at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Asselin finished the race with a time of 15:53.93, behind Iowa State's Lisa Koll (15:23.80).
"What a couragous run by Marie tonight. In less than ideal conditions, Marie went out at national record pace for nearly 2,000 meters," coach Sean Cleary says. "This marks the seventh time she has earned All-America. Marie dug down with termendous pride and kicked home for second. Running in front of 15,000 fans and earning her second runner up finish of the year is simply amazing."
The Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, native now joins teammates Keri Bland and Clara Grandt as the first female student-athletes at WVU to earn All-America honors in three different sports in one season.
Her first honor came with a 31st-place finish in cross country (20:43), followed by a second-place finish in the 5K at the Indoor Championships (15:50.53).
With Asselin's second place finish, West Virginia is now tied for 13th place in the team standings after Friday's competition.
The Mountaineers will conclude action Saturday afternoon as Bland and senior Karly Hamric race in the finals of the 1,500-meter at 1:18 p.m. ET.
