MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior right-hander Andy Altemus has been named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for his outstanding performance in two appearances against Villanova last weekend, announced today by the conference.
The Mountaineers (27-28, 10-17) earned a conference tournament bid off the bat of junior catcher Kevin Griffin, but Altemus’ relief allowed WVU to stay in both games. The Morgantown native threw a combined 13.2 innings last Thursday and Saturday and allowed just one earned run while striking out seven.
On May 20, Altemus threw 5.2 scoreless innings and struck out five in WVU’s 5-4 loss to Villanova. On May 22, he threw eight innings in relief and surrendered one run on six hits with two strikeouts as WVU won in walk-off fashion, 3-2.
Altemus is tied with fellow reliever Chris Enourato for the team lead with six victories. He has a team-low 1.48 walks-plus-hits per inning pitched, and his 28 appearances this season are a single-season school record. He also has three saves.
The reliable reliever is the first WVU player to earn conference pitcher of the week honors this year, and joins redshirt junior Grant Buckner as the only two Mountaineers named either player or pitcher of the week by the BIG EAST.
No. 8 seeded WVU opens the BIG EAST Championship with a matchup against top-seeded Louisville on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla. The contest can be heard locally on WAJR, as well as on XM channel 203. Live video and stats will be streamed on BIGEAST.org.
