MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team defeated BIG EAST foe Villanova, today, in a 6-0 match, which was terminated mid-match due to inclement weather conditions.
The Mountaineers improved their record to 16-5 in the regular season and 6-1 in the BIG EAST.
WVU swept the singles competition by winning the only four matches played today. Senior Stephanie LaFortune (No. 1), redshirt junior Monique Burton (No. 2), sophomore Kathryn Haught (No. 5) and junior Ashley Pilsbury (No. 6) captured today’s victories for the Mountaineers.
"We did the job that we needed to do today to get ready for Rutgers tomorrow,” says coach Marc Walters. “Steph (LaFortune), Katie (Haught) and Ashley (Pilsbury) all played great, and Monique (Burton) clinched the match for us by playing really smart, despite not having her best game today."
Sophomore Veronica Cardenas (No. 3) and freshman Emily Mathis (No. 4) were both leading over their opponents before the match was ceased, which captured two more singles wins for the Mountaineers.
WVU will continue action Saturday, April 17, as it travels to Newark, N.J. to compete in a noon match against BIG EAST foe Rutgers.
