MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team will play host to George Mason on Saturday, April 17, in its second-annual spring home-regatta on the Monongahela River.
The Mountaineers last competed in the Knecht Cup Regatta, in which the Varsity 4+ and Novice 8+ boats had the top performances for WVU as they each finished fifth in their respective ‘A’ Finals.
“After starting the season off well in terms of race preparation and execution, we took a step back last weekend,” says coach Jimmy King. “George Mason raced last weekend and they finished just ahead of us in two races. With better racing on our part, we hope to reverse those outcomes this weekend.”
WVU’s first home-regatta took place in the spring of 2009 against Dayton, Duquesne and George Mason. The Mountaineers’ Varsity 4+ boat made up of Kathryn Walsh, Caroline Rettig, Stephanie Roof and Keyara Stevenson, with coxswain Gillian Hanbury crossed the line in first-place with a time of 7:06.31, in front of Dayton (7:07.91), George Mason (7:12.33) and Duquesne (7:19.25).
“I wanted to host a home race in my second year, not only because the weekly travel wears the team down, but to give the students an opportunity to race at home in front of their family and friends,” adds King.
The competition is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. with the Novice 4+ race and will be followed by Varsity 4+, Varsity 8+ and second Varsity 8+ races.
The races can be watched from Edith Barill Park in Star City, W.Va. The riverfront park is located on Frontier St., between Leeway St. and University Ave. Spectators are asked to park on the street above the park.
