MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Five different Mountaineers netted goals in leading West Virginia past Akron, 7-1, Saturday evening in game two of the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center Soccer Invitational at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers built a 3-0 lead at the half of the 90-minute match behind goals from forwards Morgan Betscher, Erica Henderson and Megan Mischler.
Betscher put WVU on the board first after a scramble in the box, with Betscher emerging from the pack and slotting a ball into the left corner of the net in the eighth minute.
In the 39th minute, defender Meghan Lewis pushed forward into the attack and was fouled on the right sideline. Mallory Smith served a ball off the free kick where Henderson finished a header inside the box for the 2-0 lead.
WVU countered an Akron goal kick to extend its lead to 3-0. Mischler received a ball up the middle and touched it past the Zips goalkeeper with her left foot.
Forward Blake Miller made it 4-0 at 48:05 after working the ball up the right flank. She then dribbled at one defender and cut inside, unleashing a bending shot inside the back post for the score.
At 57:55, WVU added to its lead on a goal from midfielder Bri Rodriguez. Rodriguez was left unmarked inside the box and headed in a pass from Miller from eight yards out.
Mischler finished the scoring with a pair of goals in the 80th and 84th minutes to give the junior a hat trick.
Akron scored its lone goal on a breakaway up the left side. WVU goalkeeper Sara Keane came off her line and the Zips forward slotted a ball past her for the 1-versus-1 goal.
WVU resumes spring play against ACC foes Wake Forest and Virginia Tech on April 17 in Blacksburg, Va.
