Track: Mountaineers Finish Weekend Strong

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team finished competition this weekend with a strong showing at the Bill Van Horne Invitational on Saturday in Wheeling, W.Va.
Senior Kerry Davis had a good showing, leading the Mountaineers with a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter race. Davis, a Philippi, W.Va., native crossed the line in 10:52.80, while senior Katie Burda followed third with a time of 11:12.53.
Also racing well was sophomore Kelly Fortune who finished second in the 100-meter dash (12.88) and as a member of the 4x400 relay team. The team of Fortune, Jordann Mitchell, Brittany Wolford and Arielle Gaither finished with a time of 4:05.60.
In the field events, sophomore Lindsay Kopenhaver placed fifth in the pole vault after clearing 2.90 meters, while junior Katelyn Williams finished eighth in the shot put (10.20 meters).
Junior Terina Miller also had a good showing in the hammer throw, finishing second, throwing 44.82. Freshman Heather Adams then placed fifth (39.93 meters) and Brittany Thomas finished in 12th (33.84).
Also this weekend, senior Clara Grandt, juniors Kate Harrison, Ahna Lewis and Stephanie Caruso and sophomore Sarah Anne Brault posted excellent finishes at the Stanford Invitational on Friday.
All posted BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying times in the 5,000-meter race, while also recording personal-best times.
Grandt led the team as she finished in seventh place in section one of the 5,000-meter race with a time of 16:01.18. The finish places her second on WVU’s all-time performance list behind Olympian Megan Metcalfe.
In section two of the 5,000 meter Harrison finished in fifth (16:24.40), while Brault finished 11th (16:27.66) and Lewis finished in 14th (16:29.94).
Caruso started the day off in section four of the 5,000 meter, as she crossed the line in 11th place with a time of 17:26.28.
WVU is set to continue action at the Sea Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., on April 9-10.
