Gymnastics: Four Earn all-EAGL Honors

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – Four West Virginia University gymnasts earned nine all-East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) honors at the league’s annual banquet this evening at the Sheraton in Portsmouth, N.H.
Junior Amy Bieski and sophomore Nicole Roach collected a combined three all-EAGL first team honors.
Bieski, a Nanticoke, Pa., native, was named to the floor and all-around first teams; the honors are Bieski’s sixth and seventh first team awards of her career. She has won both awards three-straight years. The Mountaineers’ lone all-arounder earned a total of five awards this evening, as she also picked up second team vault, uneven bars and beam honors.
A four-time 2010 EAGL Gymnast of the Week, Bieski currently ranks second in the league, fourth in the Southeast region and 44th in the nation in all-around with a 39.08 regional qualifying score (RQS). She also ranks seventh in the league on floor (9.84).
Bieski has put together a solid junior campaign this season, having scored 39.0-plus points six times, including a season-best 39.25 twice. She ranks seventh all-time with 13 career 39.0-plus scores. Additionally, with 1,396.7 points, Bieski ranks 18th on the WVU all-time list.
Roach, a native of South Lyon, Mich., earned her second all-EAGL first team bars honor. One of the Mountaineers’ most-accurate and cleanest bars workers, Roach paced the team with a 9.73 season average. She ranks eighth in the league and 17th in the Southeast region with a 9.78 RQS.

Senior Chelsi Tabor earned two awards this evening, as the Beckley, W.Va., native was named to the vault and beam second teams. The defending EAGL vault champion, Tabor ranks second in the league, seventh in the region and 41st in the nation with a 9.855 RQS.
Tabor has had a banner year on vault, having earned two scores of 9.9 or better, including a career-best 9.95 on March 6.
Tabor’s beam honor is the first of her career. She paces the Mountaineers with a 9.653 average.
Sophomore Tina Maloney rounds out the Mountaineer honorees and earned second team floor honors. The award is the second league honor for the Hanover, Ind., native, and her first career floor recognition.
A three-event specialist, Maloney mastered a two-pass routine this season and ranks 18th in the Southeast region with a 9.795 RQS. She has four 9.8-plus scores to her name, including a career-best 9.85, and ranks third on the team with a 9.752 average.
North Carolina’s Christine Nguyen earned her third-straight EAGL Gymnast of the Year honor. She was also named the league’s Outstanding Senior Gymnast. Maryland’s Kelsey Cofsky and Pitt’s Meaghan Biros were named the EAGL co-Rookies of the Year, while Nguyen’s teammate, Kara Wright, earned the Scholar Athlete of the Year award.
The Mountaineers (14-7, 7-0 EAGL) seek their second EAGL crown in three seasons at the league’s championship tomorrow at 2 p.m., at Lundholm Gymnasium in Durham, N.H.
