MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team began spring competition this weekend with a tournament at Georgetown on Saturday, March 20, in Washington, D.C.
The tournament was set up so that each team played the best out of three. The Mountaineers went 4-0 on the weekend defeating Kent State (25-18, 25-20), George Mason (25-22, 20-25, 17-15), Virginia (25-23, 25-22) and James Madison (25-21, 25-18).
“I am excited that we did so well against some good competition this weekend. All of these schools are traditionally good teams,” coach Veronica Hammersmith says. “All of the kids we brought this weekend are coming back next fall and their improvement and success seen this weekend will benefit us for the fall season.”
WVU has 11 student-athletes returning to the roster next season including Abby Norman, Lauren Evans, Andrea Miller and Bonnie West who will lead the team as the senior class.
Evans, a Canyon Lake, Calif., native, finished the 2009 season leading the Mountaineers in three categories, including kills (270), service aces (37) and total blocks (121) and earned all BIG EAST second team honors for her efforts.
She was named to the all-tournament team in three of four tournaments in the fall, and was named MVP at the WVU Invitational, where she led with 55 kills and a .339 hitting percentage, while also posting 16 blocks and a team high eight service aces.
The Mountaineers finished the 2009 season with a 17-13, 6-8 record the best finished they have seen since the 2004 season.
