Gymnastics: Bieski Earns National Ranking

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University gymnast Amy Bieski jumped seven spots and is ranked No. 36 in the all-around in this week’s GymInfo Poll.
The junior from Nanticoke, Pa., pushed ahead this with a 39.08 regional qualifying score (RQS). She is the only Mountaineer to earn a national ranking this week.
Bieski has been steady as the lone WVU all-arounder this season and has scored six 39.0-plus marks in the last eight meets. She owns 13 career 39.0-plus scores and ranks seventh on the WVU all-time list. Additionally, after scoring 39.125 points in the win at UNC on March 13, Bieski’s career point total stands at 1,357.85; she needs 19.4 points to break on to the WVU all-time career points list.
The Mountaineers are tied for third place in the Southeast region with a 194.5 RQS. The team is also ranked third on balance beam (48.475), fourth on bars (48.55) and floor (48.81), and fifth on vault (48.835).
Bieski is regionally ranked third in the all-around. She paces the team on three events and is ranked eighth on floor (9.83), 14th on bars (9.785) and 16th on beam (9.735). Bieski also is ranked 16th on vault (9.8).
Senior Chelsi Tabor leads the Mountaineers’ vault lineup and is ranked 10th with a 9.835 RQS. The Beckley, W.Va., native also is ranked 18th on beam (9.72).
The WVU vault and beam lineups are the most recognized. Sophomore Tina Maloney and freshman Alaska Richardson are ranked 24th on vault (9.75), while senior Shelly Purkat and sophomore Nicole Roach are ranked 17th (9.725) and 24th (9.675), respectively, on beam.
Roach joins Bieski on the bars rankings (No. 15, 9.765), and Maloney joins the all-arounder on the floor rankings (No. 15, 9.795).
The Mountaineers share the No. 1 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) ranking with defending champions NC State. WVU is also ranked No. 1 on beam, No. 3 on bars and floor and No. 4 on vault.
Bieski is ranked first in the league in all-around. She is also ranked third on bars, fifth on floor, seventh on vault and eighth on beam.
Tabor is fifth on vault and 10th on beam, while Roach is sixth on bars and Purkat is ninth on beam.
The Mountaineers (13-7, 7-0 EAGL) recovered from a first-rotation deficit and won, 193.775-193.0, at UNC on March 13. The victory was the first for the squad since sweeping the Maryland meet on Jan. 30. WVU and UNC split rotations with the Tar Heels, winning vault (48.975-48.9) and beam (48.45-47.475), while UNC finished first on bars (47.85-47.725) and floor (48.775-48.625).
WVU closes out its regular season and plays host to Bridgeport on Friday, March 19, at 7 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum. Seniors Kiersten Spoerke, Ashley Wilson, Purkat and Tabor will be recognized following the contest.
