MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University junior guard/forward Korinne Campbell has been named WVU’s Athlete of the Week for her efforts in guiding No. 7/8 WVU to two victories last week.
The Princeton, N.J., native averaged 17 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest as WVU went 2-0 last week with a key road win at Cincinnati and in its home finale against Marquette.
Against the Golden Eagles in WVU’s 69-56 victory, Campbell scored a career-best 21 points on 8-12 shooting with five rebounds and five blocks.
At Cincinnati, Campbell tallied her third straight double-double in the Mountaineers’ 64-43 victory with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
This Week in Women’s Basketball: No. 7/8 West Virginia (26-3, 13-2) closes out regular season play with a 7 p.m. matchup at Syracuse on Monday night at the Carrier Dome … the Mountaineers lead the all-time series by an 11-8 count and have won seven of the last eight contests with the Orange.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia went 2-0 last week with a road win at Cincinnati (64-43) and closed the home portion of its schedule with a 69-56 win against Marquette … at Cincinnati Repella had her 16th career 20-point game on 8-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range … Korinne Campbell recorded her sixth career double-double and also registered three blocks and one steal … redshirt junior Vanessa House continued to be a sparkplug off the bench, playing 29 minutes and totaling nine second half points … junior point guard Sarah Miles showed why she is the BIG EAST leader in assist-to-turnover ratio with six assists and only one turnover … Miles also scored six points and had two steals … in the Marquette game the team completed its second-ever undefeated home record (17-0) in front of 4,485 fans, the sixth most to witness a women’s basketball game at the Coliseum … West Virginia was led by Campbell who played an outstanding offensive game that saw the Mountaineers shoot 26 of 48 (54.2 percent) as a team … Campbell led all scorers with a career-high 21 points, while junior Madina Ali led the team with 11 rebounds, while also chipping in eight points … Miles finished with eight assists, while also scoring 13 points … Repella and Bussie each contributed 10 points apiece.

This Week in Gymnastics: The No. 25 Mountaineers return to the WVU Coliseum and play host to Bowling Green on Saturday, March 6, at 1 p.m. … Saturday’s meet is an Alumni Meet and a Dollar Day, with all tickets and select concessions priced at $1 each.
Last Week in Gymnastics: The Mountaineers (11-7, 6-0 EAGL) finished fourth at Nebraska’s Masters Classic with 192.975 points … No. 11 NU finished first overall with 196.425 points, while No. 20 Arizona took second (194.75) and No. 18 Denver finished third (194.175) … WVU finished fourth on each event but beam, where it scored 48.05 and finished in third … the Mountaineers also scored 48.225 on vault, 48.15 on bars and 48.55 on floor … sophomore Tina Maloney earned the team’s highest finish, scoring 9.825 on floor and finishing in fourth place overall … junior Amy Bieski scored 38.3 and finished in eighth place … Bieski paced the team on vault with 9.8 points … junior Nicole Roach scored 9.725 points on bars and finished first on the team … senior Chelsi Tabor continued to shine on beam for the Mountaineers with a squad-best 9.7 score.

This Week in Rifle: The No. 1-ranked Mountaineers do not compete this week … WVU concludes its season and defends its nation-best 14th national title at the 2010 NCAA Championships, March 12-13, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Notes and Quotes: All three of WVU’s previous conference titles came when the league was known as the Midwest-American Rifle Conference ... Campriani is the first Mountaineer to earn GARC smallbore and air rifle titles in the same season ... No. 3 Kentucky finished second overall (4645) and first in air rifle (2348) ... WVU’s discipline defeat is its first of the season ... Coach Jon Hammond was named GARC Coach of the Year on Feb. 19 ... the honor is his second in three seasons ... WVU swept the conference titles, as the team won the 2010 regular season GARC Championship by virtue of its undefeated season.
This Week in Swimming & Diving: The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams will be waiting for invitations to their respective NCAA Championships … the women’s event will be in West Lafayette, Ind., from March 17-20 … the men’s will be held from March 24-27 in Columbus, Ohio.

Notes and Quotes: The team now has multiple athletes and relay teams ranked nationally and will be waiting for the rest of the conference championships to take place to see who will be going to the NCAA Championships.
This Week in Track & Field: The West Virginia University track and field team is set to return to action on March 5-6, when they travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Alex Wilson Invitational.
Last Week in Track & Field: The Mountaineers matched a school-best performance at the 2010 BIG EAST Indoor Championships with a fourth-place finish … WVU placed fourth with 76.50 points behind Villanova (115), Louisville (107) and Connecticut (84), while Georgetown (67) rounded out the top five.
Notes and Quotes: WVU returned to the national rankings at No. 22 announced last week by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association ... the Mountaineers dropped out of the polls for a week but returned after their fourth-place showing at the BIG EAST Championships on Feb. 21 ... WVU is also ranked No. 2 in Mid-Atlantic Regional Poll.
This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers will continue play on March 7, as they travel to Morehead, Ky., to compete against Morehead State at 9 a.m., followed by a 5 p.m. match against West Virginia State in Charleston, W.Va.
Last Week in Tennis: WVU defeated BIG EAST foes Connecticut in a 6-1 match on Friday, followed by a 5-2 win over Cincinnati on Sunday … the Mountaineers now have a BIG EAST record of 4-0 and a regular season record of 8-2.
Notes and Quotes: WVU defeated the Huskies 6-1 on Friday … the Mountaineers took the doubles point after winning matches at the No. 1 and 2 spots … senior Stephanie LaFortune and redshirt junior Monique Burton defeated UConn’s Kelley LoRusso and Katie Moritz 8-6 … sophomore Veronica Cardenas and freshman Emily Mathis captured the win in the No. 2 spot, with an 8-4 match against the Huskies’ Abby McKeon and Alli Campitiello … WVU continued to overwhelm UConn in the singles competition as five of the six matches of the day were won by Burton (No. 2), Cardenas (No. 3), sophomore Kathryn Haught (No. 4), Mathis (No. 5) and junior Ashley Pilsbury (No. 6) … WVU played a 5-2 match against the Bearcats on Sunday … WVU took the doubles point after winning two of the three doubles matches of the day. No. 2 pair sophomore Cardenas and freshman Mathis defeated Cincinnati’s Ksenia Slynko and Elise Woulfe in an 8-6 match, while junior Pilsbury and freshman Liv Pettersson also won 8-6 over the Bearcats’ No. 3 pair Abby Mayo and Caitlin O’Gara …the Mountaineers went 4-2 in the singles competition with a match-clinching 6-4, 7-6(8-6) win by sophomore Haught against Woulfe in the No. 4 spot … Burton, Cardenas and Pilsbury also added wins in the singles competition.
This Week in Wrestling: West Virginia will play host to the 35th annual Eastern Wrestling League Championships on Sunday, March 7 ... first session is set for 7 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum ... the last time the Mountaineers played host to the league championships was in 2003.
