MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University junior Faye Meaden has been named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) co-Rookie of the Week.
The honor is the first of her career for the Fairfax, Va., native. She is the fourth different Mountaineer honored this season, and the first to win the award since classmate Amy Bieski earned the prize five times in 2008.
Meaden’s recognition follows a tremendous showing in the Mountaineers’ split of a home tri-meet on Feb. 5. The two-event specialist paced WVU on the bars with a career-best 9.75 and tied classmate Alysha Pretzello for sixth place. She also scored 9.675 on floor and finished 10th overall.
Meaden has steadily improved her bars score in each meet this season, and through five contests, averages 9.445 points. She also averages 9.56 on floor.
WVU (10-3, 6-0 EAGL) last scored 194.475 on Feb. 5 and defeated William & Mary (187.725) and lost to then-No. 15 Michigan (196.4). Meaden contributed to the Mountaineers’ 48.725 floor showing and 48.55 bars score. WVU also tallied a season-best 48.475 on beam and scored 48.725 on vault. Since opening the season 1-2 at Michigan State on Jan. 8, WVU has put together a 9-1 record in its last four meets.
The Mountaineers continue their home stand and play host to Ohio State on Friday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum. The contest is a designated “Pink Meet” and fans are encouraged to wear pink to increase breast cancer awareness.
