MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team fell to Marshall, 7-0, today in Huntington, W.Va., bringing its regular season record to 3-1.
The Herd took the point in the doubles competition after winning all three matches. Senior Stephanie LaFortune and redshirt junior Monique Burton fought a tough match in the No. 1 spot against Marshall’s Michaela Kissell and Dominika Zaprazna, in which they were defeated 9-7.
“I was disappointed we were unable to close out any of the doubles matches,” says coach Marc Walters. “We had late leads in, although our level and competitive fire was good.”
The Herd also took the singles competition, with close attempts by Burton and sophomores Veronica Cardenas and Kathryn Haught in the No. 1, 3 and 6 spots. All three matches went into third-set tiebreakers that finished in favor of nationally-ranked Marshall.
“Mo had a great match and she hit the ball cleanly all day,” adds Walters. “Veronica and Katie (Haught) also had opportunities to win today, which showed me we’re gaining some strength in the lineup.”
The Mountaineers will continue play in Huntington, W.Va., tomorrow at 10 a.m., against Miami-Ohio.
