MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University junior Chelsea Carrier had an amazing showing today at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge hosted by Penn State, as she broke a school and meet record and posted an NCAA automatic qualifying standard in the Pentathlon.
“The pentathlon has a great tradition at WVU, and for Carrier to surpass athletes such as Abbie Stetchulte and Pat Itanyi and become our new record holder is a tremendous feat,” coach Sean Cleary says. “The history of event over the years shows us the worth of Carrier’s performance today. Itanyi could be considered the best all around track and field athlete in WVU’s women’s athletic history.”
The Buckhannon, W.Va., native won the event with 4,136 points to break the school record previously set by Pat Itanyi in 1997 (4,111). Carrier finished first in the 60-meter hurdles (8.45), the high jump (1.71 meters), the long jump (5.92 meters), the shot put (10.99 meters) and the 800-meter run (2:20.09).
Sophomore Meghan Mock also had a good showing, finishing sixth in the long jump (5.62 meters).
Also competing this evening were April Rotilio and the WVU distance medley relay (DMR) team, who traveled to New York for the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.
Rotilio finished 14th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.15, while the DMR team placed sixth with a time of 11:17.68.
Both the Sykes-Sabock Challenge and the New Balance Collegiate Invitational are set to continue action tomorrow at 11 a.m. and noon.
