Swimming: 13 Named all-BIG EAST

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Thirteen members of the West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming teams have earned all-BIG EAST recognition following their performances at the 2010 BIG EAST Championships.
For the women, the 800 free relay team of seniors Morgan Callaway and Shaunna Purtell and freshmen Robyn Matthews and Rachael Burnett earned first-team honors, along with the 400 free relay team of senior Kayla Andrews, Callaway, Burnett and Purtell.
The remaining 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay and 200 free relay teams all earned third-team selections. Both medley relays featured Andrews, Callaway, Matthews and senior Stephanie Shupe, while the 200 free relay was made up of Andrews, Purtell, Shupe and sophomore Sarah Kosmak.
Individually, Andrews earned a first-team selection with a win in the 100 free, while she also was a second-team selection with her swim in the 50 free. Burnett took first-team honors in the 500 free and was named to the second team in the 400 IM. Callaway earned first team honors in the 200 free and second team accolades in both the 500 free and 200 back. Freshman Mandie Nugent and Purtell rounded out the women’s honors with Nugent being named to the first team in the 200 fly and Purtell being a third team honoree in the 200 free.
The men’s 400 medley relays 200 medley relay were honored with second- and third-team selections, respectively. Both teams were made up of junior George Farquhar, sophomores Taylor Camp and Brad Eichenseer and freshman Jared Goldthorpe.
Farquhar, Camp, Goldthorpe and freshman Hugh Simmonds also swam on the 800 free relay team that earned a third-team selection. Camp earned second-team status with his individual performance in the 200 fly, while Goldthorpe was first team in the 500 free and third team in the 200 back. Farquhar took first-team honors with his performance in the 100 breast.
As a team the women took third and the men finished in fourth at the championships.
