MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team will head to Cincinnati to compete against Connecticut on Feb. 26, at 6 p.m., followed by a noon match against Cincinnati on Feb. 28.
“I have been pleased with our performance so far and as long as we continue to play with confidence, we should have good results to show for it,” says coach Marc Walters. “We are ready for a couple more 4-3 matches and winning those is what we look forward to.”
The Mountaineers hold a regular season record of 6-2 and a BIG EAST record of 2-0 after Friday’s 4-3 win over Georgetown at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
“I think our No. 2 doubles team is ready to break through and have a big weekend,” adds Walters. “Slow starts have been keeping them from being in a position to win, but they are on the brink of getting it together again. Our doubles wins have carried us lately, so that's an important point of emphasis this weekend as usual.”
Freshman Emily Mathis and sophomore Veronica Cardenas started off the season 3-0 in the doubles competition before falling to Marshall in their fourth match of the season. The No. 2 pair now holds a season record of 3-5.
“The Big East is deeper this year and every team we see seems to have solid players that are tough competition for anyone,” concludes Walters. “Our heads are on right this season and that's a great feeling for a coach going into matches like these.”
