MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team (6-2, 2-0 BIG EAST) defeated BIG EAST foe Georgetown today, in a 4-3 match at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
“Now that we’ve come out on top in several 4-3 matches, I feel like we are learning how to pull through with a win at the end when we need to,” says coach Marc Walters.
The Mountaineers won the doubles point after two 8-3 wins in the No. 1 and 3 spots by senior Stephanie LaFortune and redshirt junior Monique Burton in the No. 1 spot over Georgetown’s Lauren Greco and Victoria Sekely, followed by No. 3 pair junior Ashley Pilsbury and freshman Liv Pettersson’s victory over the Hoyas’ Samantha Martin and Jacquie Harrison.
Sophomore Veronica Cardenas captured a crucial win for the Mountaineers in the No. 3 singles spot against Martin to put a stop to the Hoyas’ 2-1 lead after winning the point in the No. 1 and 2 spots.
Georgetown pulled ahead again after WVU’s No. 4 player sophomore Kathryn Haught lost a close 6-4, 6-4 match against Georgetown’s Caroline Keuhn.
“It was disappointing to see Katie lose it at the end of each set because she played an awesome match against a tough competitor,” adds Walters.
The Mountaineers came back from a 2-3 deficit after tough wins in the No. 5 and 6 spots. Freshman Emily Mathis defeated Harrison 6-3, 6-2, while junior Ashley Pilsbury secured the team’s victory after winning a remarkable third-set against Georgetown’s Alex Sebia, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
“I am really proud of the way the girls came back against such a confident and skilled team like Georgetown,” Walters concludes. “This makes our BIG EAST record 2-0, which makes me believe in our team’s ability to keeping winning their way to the BIG EAST Championships.”
The Mountaineers will continue play as they travel to compete against Connecticut on Friday, Feb. 26, at 6 p.m.
