Swimming: WVU Continue to Break Records

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming teams finished day three of the 2010 BIG EAST Championships in Pittsburgh, Pa., with the women in third place and the men sitting in fourth place with 359 points and 315 points, respectively.
In the first event of the evening, the women's 400 medley relay team of senior Morgan Callaway, freshman Robyn Matthews and seniors Stephanie Shupe and Kayla Andrews placed third in the 400 medley relay with a new school-record and NCAA “B” cut time of 3:39.54.
The men's team of freshman Jared Goldthorpe, junior George Farquhar and sophomores Taylor Camp and Brad Eichenseer finished in second place with a NCAA “B” cut time of 3:14.88.
Freshman Rachael Burnett continued her outstanding meet with a second-place finish and school-record time of 4:14.91 in the 400 IM. The time was also an NCAA “B” cut time. Freshman Austen Carrington earned a fifth-place finish (13th overall) in the 400 IM consolation finals with a season-best time of 4:26.54.
The men had three swimmers in the consolation finals of the 400 IM. Freshman Jake Querciagrossa finished in second place (ninth overall) in a season-best time of 3:57.82, while senior Justin Galbreath finished in fourth place (11th overall) and junior Jeff Byrd finished in eighth place (16th overall) with times of 4:00.92 and 4:04.77, respectively.
In the 100 fly, freshman Mandie Nugent swam a personal-best time of 54.36 for fifth place, while Shupe finished in seventh with a season-best time of 55.11. Andrews also swam to second place (10th overall) in the consolation finals with a time of 55.07.
Camp led the Mountaineers in the 100 fly finals with a sixth-place finish in 48.75. Sophomores Brandon Carr, Eichenseer and Martin Vanis finished second (10th overall), third (11th overall) and fifth (13th overall) in the consolation finals of the 100 fly. Carr finished with season-best time of 49.47, Eichenseer finished in 49.56 and Vanis finished in a time of 49.69.
Seniors Morgan Callaway and Shaunna Purtell finished in first and third, respectively, in the 200 free. Callaway finished with a NCAA “B” cut time of 1:47.00, while Purtell finished in 1:48.68, also a NCAA “B” cut time. Freshman Kata Fodor finished fifth (13th overall) with a season-best time of 1:50.86 in the 200 free consolation finals.
The men featured Goldthorpe, freshman Hugh Simmonds and Camp in the 200 free consolation finals where the trio finished first (ninth overall), third (11th overall) and eighth (16th overall), respectively. Goldthorpe finished in a time of 1:38.63, while Simmonds finished in 1:39.86 and Camp in 1:43.45.
Matthews swam in the 100 breast for the women and finished in a seventh-place time of 1:03.49, while freshman Breanna McCann swam in the consolation finals to a third-place finished (11th overall) in a time of 1:04.03.
Farquhar took the 100 breast by storm with his first first-place finish in BIG EAST competition with a time personal-best time of 54.93. Sophomore Jack Greenhalgh and freshman Graham Kauffman finished the 100 breast in second (10th overall) and fourth (12th overall), respectively, in the consolation finals. Greenhalgh finished in 56.68, while Kauffman had a season-best time of 56.87.
Senior Tim Field and freshman Sara Conner completed the men's and women's day with third (11th overall) and second (10th overall) place-finishes in their respective 100 back consolation finals. Field finished his race in 51.29, while Conner finished the race with a time of 56.72.
The Mountaineers will return to Trees Pool tomorrow for the final day of the BIG EAST Championships to compete in the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay events. The preliminary round will start at 10 a.m. and the finals will be held at 6 p.m.
