Track: Mountaineers Prepare for Gold-Blue Meet

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 20 West Virginia University track and field team will compete in its last home meet of the season with the Gold-Blue meet at the WVU Shell Building on Saturday, Feb. 13. Action is set to begin at 10 a.m.
Along with the Mountaineers, teams from Alderson-Broaddus, Washington & Jefferson, Mary Washington, West Virginia Wesleyan and California (Pa.) will be competing this weekend.
Junior Chelsea Carrier is currently ranked No. 5 in the pentathlon by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, after leading the Mountaineers at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup hosted by Penn State. The Buckhannon, W.Va., native broke a meet and school record, while earning an NCAA qualifying standard after placing first with 4,136 points.
Carrier finished first in the 60-meter hurdles (8.45), the high jump (1.71 meters), the long jump (5.92 meters), the shot put (10.99 meters) and the 800-meter run (2:20.09), to break the school record previously set by All-American Pat Itanyi in 1997 (4,111).
Also last weekend, at the New Balance Collegiate Invite, junior Jessica O’Connell posted a career-best performance in the mile with an NCAA provisional time of 4:43.73.
In the 3,000-meter race, the Mountaineers took the top three spots as seniors Marie-Louise Asselin and Kaylyn Christopher also posted NCAA provisional times after finishing in first (9:25.79) and second (9:30.95), respectively, while senior Clara Grandt finished in third with a time of 9:33.57.
