Swimming: Mountaineers Fall to Gauchos

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University swimming teams fell to UC Santa Barbara on Friday afternoon in dual meet action in Santa Barbara, Calif. The men fell 161-91, while the women were defeated 158-103.
“It was a good, cold day for us,” coach Vic Riggs said. “Though we came up short, we put forth a good effort and I want thank Gregg (Wilson) and UC Santa Barbara for being a great host.”
The Mountaineers opened individual swims with Kata Fodor and Caroline Larsson taking second (10:08.60) and third (10:38.60), respectively, 500 free. Tim O’Malley then took second (10:01.29) for the men’s squad.
In the 200 free, Rachael Burnett swam to a first-place (1:52.60) finish, while Jared Goldthorpe took third (1:46.56), Hugh Simmonds took fourth (1:47.19) and Jake Querciagrossa finished fifth (1:48.45) for the men.
Rachael Gorrie was able to place second (59.02) in the 100 back, her first individual race as a Mountaineer. Gorrie was followed by Danielle Smith in fourth (1:01.48), Kaitie Layne in fifth (1:03.21) and Nikki Vetterlein in sixth (1:04.78). Then men took third through sixth in the 100 back with James Butler finishing third (54.19), Eric Johnson fourth (54.50), Bryan Brown fifth (56.80) and Leo Downes sixth (56.92).
Jaryn Studer took second (1:07.53) in the 100 breast, followed by Breanna McCann in third place (1:09.60). George Farquhar and Jack Greenhalgh took second (59.51) and third (1:01.62), respectively, for the men.
The women earned their second first-place finish of the day in the 200 fly from Mandie Nugent in 2:04.74. Austen Carrington took fourth (2:14.19) in the event, while Kyle Bandy took third (2:01.82), Joseph AbuRahma fourth (2:02.35) and Brandon Carr fifth (2:02.39) for the men.
The 50 free saw Eva Burlingham take third (25.73), followed by Hayley Kidd in fourth (27.02). Tim Squires led the men with a third-place (21.93) finish. Zach Chow also scored with a fifth-place (22.09) finish.
Lyn Ann Nelson swam to fourth (55.69) in the 100 free, with Heidi Shultz taking fifth (1:03.18). On the men’s side, Simmonds took third (48.33), followed by Brad Eichenseer in fourth (49.23) and Graham Kauffman in fifth (49.38).
In her second event, Gorrie finished third (2:09.13) in the 200 back. Carrington and Smith finished fourth (2:10.45) and fifth (2:11.79), respectively. Johnson took second (1:57.97) for the men, while Jeff Byrd and Butler finished third (1:59.71) and fourth (2:03.16), respectively.
Studer and McCann repeated their second- (2:24.38) and third- (2:28.86) place finishes in the 200 breast. Farquhar and Greenhalgh also repeated with second- (2:06.99) and third- (2:16.23) place finishes.
Burnett swam to her second first-place (4:57.94) finish in the 500 free, while Fodor finished in third (4:59.03). Goldthorpe led the men finished second (4:50.77), while O’Malley took third (4:52.11) and Simmonds fourth (4:53.23).
Nugent swam to another first-place (57.16) finish in the 100 fly, with Gorrie finishing fourth (59.75). AbuRahma took second (53.35) for the men, while Bandy finished third (53.48).
Burnett led the women again with a second-place (4:28.44) finish in the 400 IM. Sloan Storie took fifth (4:38.27) in the event. Querciagrossa finished third (4:12.64) for the men.
In the 200 medley relay, Gorrie, Studer, Nugent and Nelson took second (1:48.94) for the women, while Johnson, Farquhar, Carr and Eichenseer finished second (1:37.35) for the men.
The Mountaineers will continue to train before finishing the trip with a dual meet against Claremont in Fullerton, Calif., on Jan.4, at 5 p.m.
