MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Coach Vic Riggs of the West Virginia University swimming and diving team has announced that Rachael Gorrie has signed an athletic grant-in-aid.
“Rachael brings a great amount of talent to WVU, specifically in the backstroke, butterfly and freestyle events,” Riggs said. “We are looking for her to help improve our relays and also compete at the top of the BIG EAST.”
Gorrie, a Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, native, will join the Mountaineer program for the second semester. Gorrie has been swimming for Michael Bohl with St. Peter’s Western Swimming Club and holds state records in the 1500 free and 800 free events.
“Rachael comes from a strong swimming background under Michael and to have him encourage her to come over to WVU was great,” Riggs said. “I look forward to helping Rachael reach her goals.”
She is also a three year school record holder in the 50 free, 50 fly and 50 back. In 2010, Gorrie finished as a “B” finalist in the 200 back at the Commonwealth Games trials, while also being a member of the Queensland Academy of Sport.
“I am looking forward to the college spirit, the new challenges ahead of me and the new experiences of West Virginia,” Gorrie said.
During 2009, Gorrie was a finalist in the 100 back and 200 back at the Youth Olympic Festival, a bronze medalist in the 200 back at the Australian Age Nationals. Gorrie is a two time 200 back “B” finalist at the Australian Short Course Championships and competed at the World Championships Trials in 2007 and 2009, as well as competing at the 2008 Olympic Trials.
She has also served four years on the Kurrawa Surf Lifesaving Cub and was selected in 2008 to the World Surf Life Saving Team to compete in Germany.
