MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – West Virginia University wrestling coach Craig Turnbull today announced the signing of Dominic Prezzia as the first member of the 2010 recruiting class.
Prezzia, a St. Clairsville, Ohio, native, signed a national letter of intent to become a Mountaineer wrestler in the fall of 2011.
“He stays consistent with our philosophy of recruiting quality people from quality families,” Turnbull says. “He’s pretty much a local kid with a very supportive family that has been heavily involved in his career.”
The 165-pound grappler tallied 59 falls throughout his high school career and was a 2009 Cadet National Freestyle runner-up. Prezzia has qualified for the state tournament each season at St. Clairsville High, compiling an impressive record of 120-13.
As a freshman, Prezzia went 36-8 and qualified for the Ohio state tournament. He improved to a 37-3 record as a sophomore and came in fourth place in the state tournament that season. His junior season was equally impressive as he compiled a record of 47-2 with a third-place finish at state. He is also a three-time Ohio Valley Athletic Conference runner-up.
“He’s had outstanding success through high school,” Turnbull says. ”The junior national tournament that he was a runner-up in is the biggest high school tournament in the world and the most prestigious in the country - that shows he can compete on a national level and succeed.
“He has a lot of potential and we’re excited for him to join our program,” Turnbull says. “He’s also in a weight class area that we thought we needed to shore up a bit and we believe he can help us out.”
