MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 10/11 West Virginia women’s basketball team is set to open game one of the Paradise Jam tournament held in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Thursday at 1 p.m.
The undefeated Mountaineers (3-0) take on No. 21/ 25 TCU, who also holds a 3-0 overall record. The Lady Frogs opened the season with a 96-38 win over Houston Baptist and followed the opener with a double-overtime victory over SMU, 87-73. Two nights later, TCU defeated UTSA, 83-59, in San Antonio, Texas.
The Lady Frogs hold the advantage of having played a road game, whereas the Mountaineers have only played on their home court this season. Senior guard Emily Carter leads the Lady Frogs as she averages 30.3 points per game, shooting 54.8 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point range and 94.6 percent from the free throw line. Sophomore forward Starr Crawford leads TCU in rebounding as she averages 13.7 boards a game.
Senior co-captains Madina Ali and Liz Repella take on the leadership role for the Mountaineers for the second-straight season. Proving to be worthy of the title, both captains lead the Mountaineers in scoring as Ali averages 16.3 points per game, No. 7 in the BIG EAST, and Repella averages 15.3 points per game, No. 12 in BIG EAST. Repella leads in rebounding with 21 off the boards. Averaging 7.0 rpg ties her for the 13th highest rebounding average in the BIG EAST, while Ali is not far behind with 17 rebounds (5.7 rpg).
Thursday’s meeting is the second time WVU will face TCU in the history of the program. West Virginia holds a 1-0 all-time advantage over Texas Christian in the series as the Mountaineers came out on top of a 73-61 decision, Dec. 9, 1989. That game was also part of a tournament, which was held in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Fox Sports Net, with Brenda VanLengen announcing, will broadcast all 12 women’s basketball games live online during the Nov. 25-27 tournament. Live video streaming will be available for a one-time fee of $4.99 at http://b2tv.com/partner_members.asp?id=362.
In addition to the live television broadcast online, MSN radio’s Travis Jones will also handle live radio broadcast duties for Morgantown, Clarksburg, Charleston, Bluefield, Elkins, Keyser, Buckhannon and Summersville.
