MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team closes out its fall season this weekend as it plays host to Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) foes NC State and No. 9-ranked Nebraska at the WVU Rifle Range.
The Mountaineers (5-1, 3-0 GARC) shoot against the Wolfpack (0-3, 0-1 GARC) on Friday, Nov. 19, and against the Cornhuskers (2-3, 2-1 GARC) on Sunday. Both shoulder-to-shoulder matches are set for 8 a.m. starts.
This weekend’s matches are WVU’s fifth and sixth in three weeks. In that span, the Mountaineers have gone 4-0 and 3-0 in the conference.
“It’s definitely been a busy month for us,” says fifth-year Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond. “I think it’s been good for the team to get in a lot of match practice. I’m sure there’s fatigue, but that’s all a part of being a student-athlete.
“Obviously, we want two more wins this weekend. I’m not really too concerned with the overall team score – I just want to see progression and two good matches. Each individual has shown growth this semester, and this weekend is just another chance to gain more experience and shoot better scores. Then, we’ll take a much needed break.”
The Mountaineers earned a combined three regular-season wins over the Wolfpack and the Cornhuskers last year. WVU trumped NSCU, 4678-4561, while defeating NU, 4660-4634, and 4659-4612. Additionally, the Mountaineers captured the GARC crown, while the Cornhuskers finished third and the Wolfpack finished seventh.
All-time, WVU owns an 11-0 series record over NCSU, and a 4-3 mark over NU.
The Mountaineers went 2-0 in West Point, N.Y., last weekend, defeating No. 6 Mississippi, 4686-4647, and host No. 5 Army, 4680-4659.
Through six matches, WVU is averaging a 4676.83 aggregate score. The Mountaineers also average 2352.5 in air rifle and 2309.17 in smallbore.
Both matches this weekend are expected to last into the afternoon.
