MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team earned its fourth-straight victory, and second Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) win in as many days, with a 4680-4659 triumph over No. 5 Army, today, at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center in West Point, N.Y.
The win is the second-straight road victory for the Mountaineers (5-1, 3-0 GARC), as the team defeated No. 6 Mississippi, 4686-4647, yesterday.
WVU’s season-best air rifle score of 2359 proved to be the difference today, as the two squads tied in smallbore with matching 2321 marks. The Black Knights (1-5, 1-4 GARC) shot 2338 air rifle.
“We really needed this air rifle score today,” says fifth-year Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond. “The team has been working toward a better score, so I’m happy that everyone pulled through today. This score is promising for next semester.
“Overall, we would have liked to have improved on yesterday’s marks, but I’m happy that we were able to go on the road and get two conference wins this weekend. “
Senior Nicco Campriani shot a combined score of 1187 and finished first overall. Army’s Kelly Buck finished in second place with an aggregate score of 1180, while junior Justin Pentz shot 1173 for third place.
Campriani and Buck each shot 591 smallbore and tied for first place. Campriani, a Florence, Italy, native, matched two school records, as he shot 200 prone and 196 standing. He also shot 195 kneeling.
Pentz finished in third place with a personal-best 588 smallbore score. Included in his day was a school-record 200 prone mark. Army’s Jon Manzano followed in fourth place with a score of 582, while senior Tommy Santelli shot 580 and finished fifth.
“Justin has been working really hard in the range, and I’m glad to see his efforts are being rewarded with high scores,” Hammond says.
Campriani swept the individual competitions today, as he shot 596 (100-98-100-100-99-99) for the air rifle win. Junior Michael Kulbacki shot a season-high score of 591 and finished in second place. Buck shot 589 for third place, while teammate Michael Matthews shot 588 and finished fourth. Santelli and classmate Andy Lamson shot 586 and tied for fifth place.
Today’s win, the team’s third-straight over Army, improves WVU’s series advantage to 31-10. Additionally, the Mountaineers are now 1-1 this season against past national champions.
The Mountaineers return to the WVU Rifle Range next week and close out their fall schedule with a pair of GARC matches. The team plays host to NC State on Friday, Nov. 19, and No. 9 Nebraska on Sunday. Both matches will begin at 8 a.m.
