Mountaineers Fall in Five
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to BIG EAST foe Connecticut this afternoon at the WVU Coliseum, in its last match of the regular season.
The Huskies (6-19, 4-10 BIG EAST) defeated the Mountaineers (15-15, 5-9 BIG EAST) in an exciting 3-2 (25-17, 14-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-12) match.
WVU battled with UConn in the first set as a kill from junior Kylie Armbruster gave the Mountaineers an early 8-7 advantage. However, the Huskies returned with several runs aided by four kills apiece from Jordan Kirk and Rebecca Murray for the win.
Senior Lauren Evans and junior Michelle Kopecky teamed up on two-straight blocks to start a 7-0 run giving WVU a quick 17-8 lead in set two. The Mountaineers continued to dominate through the rest of the set as a kill from Evans and another Kopecky/Evans’ block secured the win.
Connecticut rebounded quickly to maintain the lead for most of the third set. With the set point on the line and down 24-20, West Virginia posted a comeback with kills from Kopecky and Evans, but fell as Murray posted her 14 kill of the match.
The Mountaineers gained some momentum off a service ace from sophomore Stephanie Mock to earn a 19-12 lead early in set four. Determined to protect its home court WVU captured the set after a kill from junior Serinna Russo.
However, despite its best efforts, the WVU volleyball team could not hold on to set five as the Huskies captured the win after a kill from Murray. Murray ended the match with 23 kills on a .345 hitting percentage.
Kopecky led the Mountaineers today with 15 kill and four blocks, while Armbruster and Norman finished with 11 kills apiece.
