Rowing; WVU Concludes Fall Season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team completed its fall season in Philadelphia, yesterday, winning two medals at the Philadelphia Frostbite regatta.
“This weekend’s race was a great end to the season because it was a change of pace and it gave the girls a taste of the championship season’s aggressiveness,” says associate head coach Tina Griffith. “Hopefully, this will carry through to the off-season training period.”
The Novice four boat of Micah Truex, Anya Leach, Amber McCloskey, Laura Pugh and coxswain Rebecca Knecht took first in flight three, with a time of 8:40.69, followed by WVU’s ‘C’ boat (9:18.24) in second.
The Mountaineers’ Novice four ‘A’ boat took second place in flight two, as it crossed the line in 8:11.74, behind La Salle (8:09.11).
WVU’s flight two Varsity eight boat, made up of Sarah Cartwright, Courtney Schrand, Karen Verwey, Danielle Widecrantz, Rachelle Purych, Katherine Moore, Megan Neckelmann, Hilary Meale and coxswain Brittany Doss, also took first.
The boat finished with a time of 7:13.92, ahead of Temple (7:25.94) and Rochester (7:33.75), while WVU’s flight four boat finished in third place.
In the Varsity open four event, the Mountaineers’ ‘A’ and ‘B’ boats each took second place in their respective flights.
WVU placed first, second and fourth in the women’s master double final, while both Novice eight boats finished fourth in their respective flights.
“The novice team was a little shaky in the eights, but had some really solid strokes in the latter part of the race, showing good potential,” adds Griffith. “The varsity squad continued to mix up the lineups and the results have shown our versatility and depth. This, in addition to the increased overall strength, is a good start to the year.”
