MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team defeated No. 22 Notre Dame, 2-1, in front of 977 fans on Saturday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Sophomore Shadow Sebele and junior Franck Tayou provided the Mountaineers with one goal apiece.
“It was important to get three points and it puts us at the top of table where we want to be. That is a good soccer team we just played against and I think it is going to help us in more ways than one, not just with the points, but also our confidence,” coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “We told these guys before the game that you are a good team, you just have to believe it. That is the difference between us and a lot of other teams; sometimes we do not believe it.”
Sebele scored West Virginia’s first goal only 12 minutes into the game on a penalty kick. After West Virginia pressured the Notre Dame defense, there was a flurry of action in front of the net and a Notre Dame defender was whistled for a handball. Sebele was able to connect with the back of the net for his second goal of the season, both have come on penalty kicks.
Junior Raymon Gaddis initiated the second West Virginia as he gathered the ball in the WVU defensive end and began to run up the field. Gaddis then passed the ball to sophomore Peabo Doue, who let the ball play through and Gaddis regained possession streaking down the right side of the field before crossing the ball to Franck Tayou. Franck Tayou was able to head the ball past the Notre Dame keeper for his fourth goal of the season in the 20th minute.
Notre Dame was able to score a goal by Steven Perry in the 82nd minute to cut the lead to one. Perry took a cross from Dillon Powers and took a shot that deflected of WVU keeper Zach Johnson and trickled into the back of the net.
Other than the goal, WVU’s defense and Johnson played tremendously with junior Matt Drake filling in for the injured senior Dan Hagey and freshman Allan Flott who played for sophomore Eric Schoenle who had to miss the game because of a red card in the previous game.
“We made a tactical change with (Nick) Claudio and we brought him in there for the last five minutes to lock some things down, which we did,” LeBlanc said. “They were dangerous from distance, but I feel good about my goalkeeper from distance if he is facing shots from 18 or 25 yards out. It is when they get behind us and we did a good job of not letting them get behind us.”
Johnson finished with four saves, including one in the 43rd minute when Kyle Richard took a shot that Johnson was able to punch over the net.
Notre Dame led in shots, 10-6, while also holding the corner kick advantage, 8-6. There were five yellow cards given in the match and West Virginia had 18 fouls to Notre Dame’s 7.
The Mountaineers are now 23-0-2 when scoring two or more goals since LeBlanc’s tenure began in 2006.
West Virginia will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 13 when it hosts Pitt at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The match will begin at 7 p.m. and has been designated as a “Dollar Night” with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Cola products available for purchase for just one dollar.
