MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team will play host to No. 22 Notre Dame on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. presented by EZToUse.com. The match will be held at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
“We have always had great battles in the past with Notre Dame. We have a tough stretch of games coming up in the near future and our guys always get up for big games,” coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “We are going to be a bit depleted with injuries and Eric (Schoenle) having to miss the game, but I think our kids will be prepared.”
The Mountaineers (5-3-2) are starting a stretch that includes three ranked opponents in the next four games after coming of a tie with Elon Wednesday night, 1-1. In that game, sophomore Eric Schoenle was given a red card, forcing him to miss the Notre Dame match. Schoenle scored West Virginia’s only goal in the match. West Virginia is led by sophomore Peabo Doue who has five goals this season, while sophomore Shadow Sebele has five assists.
Notre Dame (5-2-3) brings a four-game unbeaten streak to Morgantown after beating Indiana, 2-1, on Wednesday. Senior Steve Perry leads the Fighting Irish with five goals and 12 points, while senior goalkeeper Philip Tuttle is 2-0-1 with a 0.93 goals-against average.
This will be the 15th meeting between the two schools with the Fighting Irish leading the series 8-5-1. Last season, West Virginia upset Notre Dame on their home field by a 1-0 score after getting out-shot, 18-3. The last three matches have been 1-0 decisions.
A free WVU shuttle bus service will be available from the Mountainlair and the Brooke/Braxton Towers loop for an hour leading up to the game’s start time. Return service to the Mountainlair and the Brooke/Braxton Towers will also be available at the conclusion of the game.
