MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University rifle coach Jon Hammond was awarded the Bronze medal in men’s pairs 50m rifle 3 position at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, today, in Delhi, India.
Hammond, an Aberdeen, Scotland, native, and his partner, Neil Stirton, secured the third-place finish for team Scotland with a combined final score of 2308 (104x). The pair was narrowly defeated by team England, as James Huckle and Kenny Parr also shot a combined 2308, but finished with an “x” count of 105. An “x” count is a running tally of a shooter’s center 10 shots.
India won the Gold medal with a combined score of 2325.
“It’s obviously great to win a medal for Scotland, and it was nice to do so in my first match of the games,” Hammond, the fifth-year Mountaineer coach, says. “I’m slightly sore to lose the Silver medal on a tie-breaker, and especially to England, but I’m relatively happy with my performance, and I hope to improve on it tomorrow in the individual competition.”
Hammond enjoyed a strong showing today, shooting 398 prone (100-100-99-99), 371 standing (90-94-94-93) and 391 kneeling (98-96-98-99) to finish with an aggregate score of 1160. Stirton shot an aggregate score of 1148 (395 prone, 372 standing, 381 kneeling).
The Commonwealth Games are an international, quadrennial event, similar to the Olympics, in which athletes from the members of the Commonwealth of Nations compete. This year’s games, the 19th overall and the first to be held in India, opened on Oct. 3, and will close on Oct. 14.
The games provide Hammond with a unique opportunity to shoot for Scotland, as he generally represents Great Britain on the international stage, as he did at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
Hammond will return to the range tomorrow and compete in the men’s 50m rifle 3 position.
