MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Eric Schoenle scored his second goal of the season on Wednesday evening, but it was not enough as the West Virginia University men’s soccer team tied Elon, 1-1, in double overtime at Rudd Field.
West Virginia (5-3-2) scored first in the 61st minute after an Elon foul along the goal line. Sophomore Shadow Sebele was able to send the free kick into the box where Schoenle raced through the defenders and headed the ball into the far corner of the net to take the 1-0 lead.
The Mountaineers continued to provide offensive pressure after the goal; however a late Elon goal by Stephen Dilger tied the game.
Elon took a corner with only 39 seconds left on the clock and West Virginia was able to initially clear the ball out of harm’s way. Dilger, however, gathered the loose ball in the box and was able to put the ball in the back right corner through a flurry of players to tie the game with only 12 seconds remaining.
The Mountaineers came out firing in the first half and had multiple chances that started with a save in the eighth minute by Elon keeper Clint Irwin on a shot by sophomore Travis Pittman. Pittman drove through the Elon defenders and ripped a bending shot from 25 yards out that Irwin was able to make a diving save on.
Only a few seconds later, sophomore Peabo Doue cut in and sent a left-footed shot from 18 yards out just wide.
WVU added another opportunity just before halftime when junior Raymon Gaddis repossessed the ball in the WVU defensive zone and flew up the field before having a close-range shot blocked by an Elon defender.
The Mountaineers started the second half with two great corner kick opportunities in the opening two minutes.
Other than the goal, the best chance in the second half was when Sebele rang a shot off the post in the 55th minute. The ball was played in front of the goal to junior Franck Tayou who was able to settle the ball over to Sebele who had Irwin one-on-one, but was unable to finish.
The Mountaineers finished with 17 shots to Elon’s 11. West Virginia also led in corner kicks, holding a 5-2 advantage.
Senior keeper Zach Johnson recorded six saves in the loss and is fourth all-time in career saves by a goalkeeper with 255 saves.
West Virginia will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 9 against Notre Dame presented by EZToUse.com at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m.
