Volleyball: Serving Aids WVU to Victory

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The West Virginia University volleyball posted 10 service aces in today’s win over BIG EAST foe Rutgers at College Avenue Gymnasium in Piscataway, N.J.
WVU improved to 12-7, 2-2 BIG EAST after defeating the Scarlet Knights (7-10, 0-4 BIG EAST) in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-23) match.
“Our focus at the service line was huge today,” coach Jill Kramer says. “ We talked a lot about focus and executing our match plan today and I thought we did a great job of that. Rutgers defense was great in the third set and they made us work really hard for every point. Our pin hitters did a great job across the board today – probably one of the best performances from them collectively all season.”
With two service aces from senior libero Bonnie West followed by kills from juniors Kylie Armbruster and Michelle Kopecky, the Mountaineers started set one with a quick 6-3 lead. WVU’s serving continued to dominate as it went on to post six-team service aces to win the set.
Senior Abby Norman led WVU in the second set with five kills on a .500 hitting average. Up 23-17, Norman landed one of her kills to give the Mountaineers the momentum to win the set.
The Scarlet Knights retuned to post an early 10-5 lead over the Mountaineers after junior Hannah Curtis posted several kills to lead her team. WVU then capitalized on Rutgers’ mistakes, while junior setter Kari Post and Kopecky recorded kills to bring the Mountaineers to within one. Down 21-22, Norman posted another kill, followed by a service ace from West to give WVU the advantage. Senior middle blocker Lauren Evan then ended the match with her third kill of the day.
Norman led the Mountaineers with nine kills, while West recorded 15 digs and four service aces.
“We are excited to be back at home next weekend hosting Georgetown on Friday (Oct. 8) and USF on Sunday (Oct. 10),” Kramer adds. “Friday will be the “Dig Pink” match for breast cancer awareness. We are looking forward to seeing everyone out at the Coliseum again!”
The Mountaineers return to the WVU Coliseum on Oct. 8, when they host BIG EAST foe Georgetown in an 7 p.m. match.
