Volleyball: Mountaineers Fall in Three

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell in three sets this afternoon to BIG EAST foe Villanova in Philadelphia.
The Wildcats (19-4, 7-1 BIG EAST) defeated the Mountaineers (14-9, 4-4 BIG EAST) in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-21) match.
WVU held the lead for most of set one as, juniors Michelle Kopecky and Serinna Russo posted three kills apiece. However, after a kill from senior Lauren Evans aided the Mountaineers to a 14-17 lead, the Wildcats then returned with a 4-0 run for the lead fueled by a kill from Morgan Petkovich.
Set two also started with a WVU lead. With the match tied at nine, Petkovich posted another kill to boost the Wildcats, as Kim Maroon ended the set with a kill.
Down 3-1 in set three, consecutive kills from Russo, Evans and junior Kylie Armbruster aided WVU back in the lead. However, despite their best efforts, the Mountaineers fell as Villanova posted 21 kills to win the match.
Junior setter Kari Post recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 18 assists and 12 digs, while Armbruster finished with 16 digs and Kopecky led with eight digs.
The Mountaineers return to BIG EAST action on Friday, Oct. 29, when they travel for a match at Marquette.
