MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team concluded day two of the Queen City Classic this evening in Cincinnati, Ohio, with two competitors making it to the finals.
Freshman Melis Tanik will be competing in the flight ‘A’ finals tomorrow, after winning 7-6, 6-2 in the semi-finals against Xavier’s Andrea Wolfe. Senior Ashley Pilsbury captured a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the flight ‘B’ semi-finals, making her the second Mountaineer to make it to the finals.
“In singles, we battled through some tough matches and never gave up,” says coach Tina Samara. “We are continuing to work on shot selection to avoid giving up free points, so I think we are making progress.”
Junior Veronica Cardenas also continued competing in the flight ‘B’ singles competition, but was defeated in the quarter-finals in a tough third-set tiebreaker against XU’s Ally Westling.
In doubles action, Pilsbury and sophomore Liv Pettersson captured an 8-6 victory over BSU’s Sarah Hebble and Kristen Sanders, but fell short in the flight ‘B’ semi-finals against XU’s Kelsey Kinnard and Christie Ploimen.
The flight ‘A’ pair of Tanik and sophomore Emily Mathis also finished its run in the doubles competition after falling in the quarter-finals to BSU’s Kylie Johnson and Lauren Pickrel in a 9-7 match.
“I also think we made some progress in doubles today,” adds Samara. “We are learning how to be doubles players, rather two singles players playing doubles."
Tomorrow, Mathis, Pettersson and junior Catie Wickline will be competing in the consolation finals of their respective flights.
