MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Duquesne this evening at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The Dukes (16-6, 4-2 Atlantic 10) defeated the Mountaineers (14-9, 4-3 BIG EAST) in 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-14) match.
Down 16-17 in set one, two-straight kills from juniors Kylie Armbruster and Serinna Russo, combined with a good defensive effort fueled a 5-0 run for the Mountaineers to take back the lead. The Dukes came back strong in set two and posted a quick 10-6 lead over the Mountaineers. WVU then fought to tie the match at 10, but despite their best efforts fell as Duquesne came back for the win with four team blocks in the set.
Duquesne carried that momentum into the third set and despite a comeback from the Mountaineers, dominated as junior Sarah Scheirman posted six kills for the win.
The Dukes continued to roll in the fourth set as they captured the victory.
Despite the loss, Armbruster led the Mountaineers with her second-straight double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs.
