Baseball: Gold Team Edges Blue

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After building a 2-0 lead, the Gold team withstood the Blue team’s ninth-inning rally, winning the second game of the West Virginia University World Series, 3-2, this evening at Hawley Field.
After the Gold team added an insurance run in the eighth inning, the Blue team approached the plate in the top of the ninth with hopes of mounting a comeback. Jeremy Gum struck out to lead off the inning. Matt Malloy reached first when he was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on Justin McDavid’s single and scored when Isac Franklin lined out to left field. With two outs and McDavid on first, Tyler Steele-Worsham lined out to second, ending the Blue team’s chances.
With the victory, the Gold team owns a 2-0 series advantage.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Josh Harlow was credited with the win. The Shinnston, W.Va., native, pitched the first five innings, allowing three hits and recording one strikeout. Freshman right-hander Ryan Tezak suffered the loss. The Hershey, Pa., native worked five innings and gave up one run on two hits, while walking two and striking out one.
Sophomore Michael Twigg earned the save, pitching three innings, giving up two runs on four hits, striking out four and walking one.
Freshman Ryan McBroom led the Gold team at the plate with two hits in four plate appearances, finishing with a walk and a double. Malloy, McDavid and Steele-Worsham led the Blue team with two hits each.
After four innings of scoreless play, the Gold team finally broke into the run column in the bottom of the fifth inning, with a sacrifice fly from Max Nogay, scoring Chris Rasky. Rasky walked to leadoff the inning, and then advanced to second when Clark Sambuco reached on a fielding error by Tezak. Rasky advanced to third on Kevin Griffin’s sacrifice bunt to third and scored when Nogay flew out to right field.
A leadoff walk to Brady Wilson opened the Gold team’s sixth inning at the plate. A Grant Buckner single and a walk to Matt Frazer followed, and with the bases loaded, Wilson scored on a wild pitch from Corey Walter.
The Blue team answered in the top of the seventh, as Malloy’s solo home run, his third of the fall season, brought the score to 2-1. McDavid followed and got on base with a single, but was thrown out trying to steal second base. Twigg struck out Franklin looking, the pitcher’s third strikeout of the game, and ended the inning.
In the Gold team’s eighth inning, Wilson singled to center field to lead off the inning, advanced to second on McBroom’s single to center. Wilson advanced to third on Buckner’s fielder’s choice to second and scored when Frazer reached on a fielding error by Franklin. Cody Dolan hit into a double play to end the inning.
The Gold team looks for a series sweep tomorrow, with the third and final game scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Hawley Field.
