Rifle: No. 1 WVU Opens Season with Win

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team opened its 2010-11 season with a 4676-4570 victory over No. 14-ranked Ohio State, today, at the WVU Rifle Range.
The Mountaineers (1-0) earned two discipline wins, as they defeated the Buckeyes (0-1) in smallbore (2321-2264) and air rifle (2355-2306).
With the win, WVU improves to 37-0 all-time against OSU. Additionally, today’s victory extends the Mountaineers’ regular season win streak to 18 matches.
“Today was a good overall start for the team,” says graduate assistant Lafe Kunkel. “We had a rough morning, but we got the nerves out of our system and finished strong. Today’s result is a starting point for the rest of the season.”
Senior Nicco Campriani finished first overall with an aggregate score of 1188, one shot short of the school record he set at the Winthrow Invitational on Jan. 31, 2010. The Florence, Italy, native also finished first in both disciplines, shooting 597 (99, 99, 100, 100, 100, 99) air rifle and 591 (199 prone, 195 standing, 197 kneeling) smallbore.
Senior Kyle Smith finished second overall with an aggregate score of 1164, while classmate Andy Lamson finished third with a score of 1163. Amanda Furrer paced the Buckeyes with an aggregate score of 1157.
Smith finished second behind Campriani in smallbore with a score of 580. Included in the DuBois, Pa., native’s day was a school record 200 prone score. Smith has shot the record several times throughout his four-year career, most recently in the victory over Air Force in Lincoln, Neb., on Oct. 10, 2009.
Sophomore Justin Pentz shot 578 in smallbore and finished in third place, while Lamson and senior Tommy Santelli tied for fourth place and shot 575.
In air rifle, Lamson shot 588 and finished in second place, while Santelli finished in third place with a score of 586. Smith shot 584 for fourth place.
The Mountaineers return to the WVU Rifle Range on Sunday, Oct. 24, and play host to No. 2-ranked TCU, the reigning national champions, at 8 a.m.
