MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, West Virginia University women’s soccer players Sydney Metheny and Meghan Lewis showcased pink Nike uniforms yesterday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.
The uniforms will be worn as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Day on Sunday, Oct. 17, when the Mountaineers take on Georgetown at 1 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game in joining WVU’s effort to help fight breast cancer.
“Speaking for the team, we know that many people are affected by breast cancer, and we want to let people know that we will fight for them,” says junior defender Meghan Lewis. “It is also our way to contribute and give something back to this awful disease that affects many women, especially our friends and families.”
During halftime, the WVU coaching staff will make a check presentation to the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center. Fans will also be provided pink bracelets, breast cancer awareness magnets and educational material about breast cancer.
The WVU women’s soccer team raised $12,141 this past spring in its effort to help fight breast cancer. Over the past seven years, the WVU women’s soccer team has raised more than $60,000 to help fight breast cancer.
“Little by little each year, we are giving courage to those to keep fighting because they are not alone,” says assistant coach Marisa Kanela. “We are a TEAM, all fighting for the same cause. On Sunday, these young ladies are not just fighting for a win, they are fighting for a cause that hits home to so many.”
