MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Riding a five-game unbeaten streak, the West Virginia University men’s soccer team will travel to Washington, D.C., for a match against Georgetown on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 1 p.m. The match will be played at North Kehoe Field.
“It’s in the back of our minds what happened at the end of last season when we gave up the lead and ended up losing 2-1,” coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “We’re back into BIG EAST play on the road and three points will be a premium on that day.”
The Mountaineers (5-2-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) come into the match last playing at Duquesne on Wednesday night. WVU and the Dukes battled it out to a scoreless draw that was much in part due to a save by senior keeper Zach Johnson on a penalty kick by Duquesne with about four minutes remaining in regulation.
West Virginia is led by Peabo Doue who has five goals and two assists for 12 points. Johnson has now recorded three-straight shutouts and has a goals-against average of 0.82.
All-time against Georgetown, the Mountaineers are 4-10, having lost the last two matches to the Hoyas. WVU last played at Georgetown in 2008, losing 1-0 on a Georgetown goal in the 63rd minute.
The Hoyas (3-4-1, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) last played Adelphi at home on Wednesday, defeating the Panthers, 2-0. Tommy Muller and Uche Onyeador lead the team with two goals apiece, while Steve Neumann has one goal and four assists. In net, the team is led by Matthew Brutto who has played in seven games and has given up 10 goals with a goals-against average of 1.35.
“Georgetown has been a little bit of an enigma this season, but they are still very, very good,” LeBlanc said. “They beat a very good Michigan State team 4-0 earlier in the year, so you know they can be dangerous. (Jose) Colchao is a good player in there and they have a number of different players who can hurt you.”
Georgetown is led by coach Brian Wiese who is now in his fifth season at the helm.
