Volleyball: WVU Continues BIG EAST Action

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team continues BIG EAST action this weekend with matches at Seton Hall on Oct. 2 and at Rutgers on Oct. 3. Both matches are slated for 2 p.m.
The Mountaineers are 11-6, 1-1 BIG EAST after opening conference competition last weekend with a loss to Notre Dame (0-3), before rebounding to defeat DePaul (3-0).
Senior middle blocker Lauren Evans had a good weekend, as she posted 20 kills with a .389 hitting clip. Junior outside hitter Michelle Kopecky followed with 19 kills, while junior set Kari Post recorded 73 assists.
As a team, the Mountaineers are currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA for digs per set, averaging 19.94. Senior Bonnie West, WVU’s career digs leader, leads the team with 277 this season.
Seton Hall (6-11, 1-1) also spilt its first weekend of conference action with a win over Louisville (3-2) and a loss to No. 25 Cincinnati (0-3). Senior Sarah Osmun was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after helping the Pirates to defeat the Cardinals for the first time in school history. Also, the Crystal Lake, Ill., native posted 37 kills over the weekend to put her in first place for most career kills at Seton Hall.
WVU leads the all time series with the Pirates 11-10, despite falling to them 1-3 last season in Morgantown.
The Scarlet Knights are 7-8, 0-2 BIG EAST after falling to Cincinnati and Louisville in 3-0 matches last weekend. Senior Stephanie Zielinski led the team with 60 assists, while also posting a double-double with 30 assists and 10 digs against the nationally ranked Bearcats.
Last season, WVU defeated Rutgers, 3-0, in Morgantown moving the all-time record to 22-17 in favor of the Mountaineers.
