MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia finished 22nd in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Top 25 Poll and No. 25 in the final Associated Press Top 25, both announced today.
It is the fifth consecutive year West Virginia has finished the year ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 - the longest streak in school history. The Mountaineers had three consecutive finishes in the final AP poll in 1953, 1954 and 1955, and 1982, 1983 and 1984.
Coach Don Nehlen's Mountaineers finished the year ranked four straight years in the UPI poll in 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985.
This year marks the 18th time in school history West Virginia has finished the year nationally ranked, and the 13th time the Mountaineers have finished the year ranked in both major polls.
Bill Stewart is the first coach in school history to lead teams to AP Top 25 finishes in his first two seasons coaching the Mountaineers. Stewart also had a hand in West Virginia's No. 8 ranking in 2008 following WVU's 48-28 victory over Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
WVU was one of three Big East schools to finish in the rankings this year. Cincinnati placed No. 8 in the AP poll and No. 9 in the ESPN/USA Today poll, while Pitt was 15th in both polls.
