MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s nationally ranked women’s basketball team (13-1, 1-0) takes on Backyard Brawl rival Pitt (11-3, 0-1), Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum. The contest will be televised nationally by CBS College with Ann Schatz and Tammy Blackburn on the call.
West Virginia (13-1, 1-0) is off to its best 14-game start in school history and has won 11 games in a row, the most of the Mike Carey era and most since stringing together 22 in a row during the 1991-92 season. WVU has also won 11-straight contests at home, the third-longest home winning streak in school history.
The Mountaineers are fresh off a key 54-50 BIG EAST opening road win at St. John’s this past Saturday. Freshman center Asya Bussie chipped in a game-high 15 points with nine rebounds and had a career-best six blocks, the most by a Mountaineer since 2004.
WVU leads the all-time series with Pitt by a 21-18 count. The Mountaineers have dropped three straight to the Panthers but lead the all-time series in BIG EAST regular season play at 12-8. WVU is also 11-6 all-time against Pitt in the WVU Coliseum. Carey is 7-4 all-time against Pitt coach Agnus Berenato. The meeting marks the third straight season that both the Mountaineers and Panthers will meet twice in the regular season.
Junior guard Liz Repella leads WVU with a 15.5 points per game average, while Bussie is second on the squad with 12.5 points per contest. Junior guard/forward Korinne Campbell rounds out the double-digit scoring trio with 10.8 points a game. Campbell is also the team leader in rebounds at 7.6 per contest. Junior point guard Sarah Miles boasts 91 assists and leads the conference in assists per game at 7.0.
Junior guard Taneisha Harrison leads the Panthers with 13.4 points per contest. Pitt is coming off a 66-55 loss at Marquette this past weekend and has lost two of its last three, including a 72-63 setback against Duquesne last week.
The contest will be broadcast on MSN women’s basketball affiliated stations with play-by-play announcer Travis Jones and color commentator Jay Jacobs on the call. A webcast and live stats of the contest can be viewed at www.MSNsportsNET.com.
