Gymnastics: WVU Improves Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) victories and a meet full of season-high scores helped push the West Virginia University gymnastics team ahead in this week’s GymInfo Poll.
The Mountaineers’ (6-2, 4-0 EAGL) floor lineup continues to be the squad’s strongest event, as WVU jumped one spot in today’s national poll to No. 16. The squad is averaging 48.725 points per meet and is tied with Washington.
Junior Amy Bieski also moved ahead in the national rankings, jumping one spot to No. 40 on floor with a 9.808 average.
The Mountaineers moved ahead to No. 5 overall in the southeast region with a 192.55 average. WVU remains at No. 2 on floor and No. 6 on bars (47.917), while moving up to No. 4 on vault (48.525) and No. 6 on beam (47.383).
Bieski continues to be ranked regionally on three events. The Nanticoke, Pa., native is tied for sixth on floor, and is also 10th all-around (38.492) and 18th on vault (9.758).
Senior Chelsi Tabor also owns multiple regional rankings. The Beckley, W.Va., native is 14th on the vault (9.792) and beam (9.7).
In total, six Mountaineers are regionally ranked on floor. Junior Naja Johnson trails Bieski and is tied for 13th (9.775), while sophomore Tina Maloney is ranked No. 18 (9.733). Senior Kiersten Spoerke is tied with junior Stephanie Keaton at No. 19 (9.717), and freshman Chelsea Goldschrafe is ranked No. 22 (9.7).
WVU jumped one spot to No. 4 in the EAGL. The team is steady at No. 2 on floor, and moved up to No. 3 on vault, No. 4 on bars and No. 5 on beam.
The improved rankings follow the Mountaineers’ season-best 194.0 score and 3-0 showing against league foe NC State (193.225), Maryland (193.0) and George Washington (188.65) yesterday. Bieski finished first overall with 39.15 points, while Tabor tallied a season-high 9.875 score on vault and won the event.
The Mountaineers return to the gym and square-off against Maryland, Rutgers and No. 16-ranked Denver on Saturday, Jan. 30, at 4 p.m. in College Park, Md.
