Swimming: Mountaineers Split with Maryland

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams split dual meets today with Maryland at the Eppley Recreation Natatorium in College Park, Md.
The men defeated the Terrapins, 136-107, while the women fell, 133-108. The Mountaineers had nine athletes record at least one win in the efforts with seniors Kayla Andrews and Brandon Robinson, sophomore Brad Eichenseer and freshman Rachael Burnett all recording two wins apiece.
The West Virginia men started the meet off with an impressive win in the 400 medley relay, which included senior Tim Field, junior George Farquhar and sophomores Martin Vanis and Joe Bailey in a time of 3:25.39.
Sophomore Taylor Camp and freshman Jared Godlthorpe continued the success with second-and third-places finishes, respectively, in the 200 free. Camp recorded a time of 1:41.92, while Goldthorpe finished in 1:42.19.
Eichenseer brought home his first first-place finish of the day in the 50 free in 20.87, followed by a win in the 100 free in 45.91. Bailey finished second for West Virginia in the 100 free with a time of 47.22.
Farquhar finished second in the 200 IM with a time of a 1:53.57 and was followed by sophomore Brandon Carr in third place in 1:57.31. Farquhar later went on to take first place in the 200 breast with a time of 2:04.74.
Camp then recorded his only win of the day in the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.05, only defeating the Maryland swimmer by .2 seconds.
Goldthorpe and Field each recorded points in the 200 back with Goldthorpe taking first place in 1:48.24 and Field finishing third at 1:53.15.
In the diving well, Robinson won the 1-meter (319.65 points) and 3-meter (348.37 points) boards. Sophomore Matt O’Neill finished a close second in each with scores of 315.22 points in the 1-meter and 343.65 in the 3-meter.
The 400 free relay team of Goldthorpe, Camp, freshman Hugh Simmonds and Eichenseer finished the successful day with a first-place finish in a time of 3:04.96.

The women swam to their first first-place finish with freshman Kata Fodor swimming to victory in the 1000 free. Fodor finished with a time of 10:11.02. Fellow freshman Sloan Storie also placed third in the event in 10:27.21.
Burnett continued her successful season with a win in the 200 free, touching the wall in 1:50.53 with senior Morgan Callaway finishing third in 1:51.82.
Andrews also continued dominance with wins in the 50 free and 100 free. She finished the 50 free in 23.16 and the 100 free in 50.37. Senior Shaunna Purtell took second for West Virginia in the 100 free with a time of 51.35.
Freshman Robyn Matthews touched the wall with a time of 2:06.69 to win the 200 IM, while freshman Breanna McCann placed third in 2:07.83.
Freshman Mandie Nugent and Burnett took second and third, respectively, in the 200 fly with Nugent finishing in 2:03.39 and Burnett in 2:03.82. Burnett then recorded her second win of the day in the 500 free with a time of 4:51.69, while Fodor placed second in 5:00.78.
Matthews and McCann ended the day for the women individual with second and third place finishes, respectively, in the 200 breast. Matthews finished in 2:19.96, while McCann finished at 2:21.62.
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 30, when they face Virginia Tech and Duquesne in a double dual meet at the WVU Natatorium. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon with live results available at MSNsportsNET.com.
