MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball player Jedd Gyorko has been named to the Ping!Baseball preseason All-America first team, announced by the publication today.
Gyorko now owns three preseason honors, being named a second-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association as well as Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. He recently was selected as the Preseason Big East Player of the Year and was a unanimous selection on the preseason all-Big East team.
The Morgantown native ended his sophomore year with a .421 batting average, eight home runs, 58 RBIs and a school-record 28 doubles, which ranked second nationally in 2009. He also scored 74 runs and tallied 96 base hits in 55 games played.
Gyorko was one of four Big East players honored by Ping!Baseball. The others include Connecticut outfielder George Springer (second team), Louisville designated hitter Phil Wunderlich (second team) and USF pitcher Randy Fontanez (third team).
WVU begins its season on Feb. 19 at No. 17 Coastal Carolina at the Caravelle Resort Tournament in Conway, S.C. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
