Volleyball: Mountaineers Fall to Marshall

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Marshall this evening at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, W.Va.
The Herd improved to 13-2, after the 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 25-15) defeated over the Mountaineers (10-5).
Set one proved to be a battle, as the Mountaineers started the match with a kill from senior outside hitter Abby Raines. After a set of kills from sophomore outside hitter Kylie Armbruster and junior outside hitter Andrea Miller, the Mountaineers jumped to an early 5-3 lead. The Herd then rallied back with several runs to regain the lead, in which they held for the rest of the set. With the score 24-19, in favor of the Herd, the Mountaineers made a late set run, but despite their best efforts fell.
The Mountaineers turned things around in set two, with eight kills and 12 digs to tie up the match. With the set tied at 22, middle blockers sophomore Michelle Kopecky and freshman Whitney Lee posted a block that gave the Mountaineers the advantage and the momentum. WVU took set two after a bad serve from the Herd.
Marshall rebounded in the third set to an early 7-4 lead. They then went on to post 16 team kills to win set three. Refusing to fall, WVU came back to posted an 8-4 lead in the fourth set, after a kill from senior outside hitter Kristina Gallahan. Excellent serving from Marshall then tied up the set up at eight, as the Herd came back to regain the lead and eventually the match.
Junior Lauren Evans led the Mountaineers with nine kills and a .471 hitting percentage, while sophomore setter Kari Post recorded a double-double with 33 assists and 13 digs.
Marshall had a record crowd for this evenings match with over 1,500 fans in attendance.
The Mountaineers are set to begin BIG EAST action this weekend with a 2 p.m. match against Syracuse on Saturday, Sept. 26, and a 2 p.m. match against Marquette on Sunday, Sept. 27.
