STONY BROOK INVITATIONAL RESULTS
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team finished its weekend at the Stony Brook Classic with several titles in the singles and doubles competitions.
On Sept. 18, the Mountaineers competed in doubles play against Stony Brook, Northwestern, Houston and Fairleigh Dickinson.
“We had some good wins but it wasn’t a great day for us,” says head coach Marc Walters. “We tried a lot of different doubles combinations without much continuity, so we look forward to the formation of solid doubles teams as we get further into the season.”
Senior Stephanie LaFortune and redshirt junior Monique Burton highlighted their day with an outstanding 8-4 win over Houston’s Bryony Hunter and Elena Kazakova. Freshman Emily Mathis and sophomore Veronica Cardenas also defeated Houston’s Maja Kazimieruk and Joanna Kacprzyk, 8-4.
Junior Ashley Pilsbury and freshman Liv Pettersson won their first match, 8-6, over Stony Brook’s Salome Mkervalidze and Fanny Charliquar.
Pilsbury captured another win against FDU when teamed up with senior Gabriela Blaskovicova, along with the WVU pair of sophomores Catie Wickline and Kathryn Haught. Both teams won their matches 8-2.
WVU continued play on Sept. 19, with the singles competition.
Haught defeated Stony Brook’s Aylin Mehler in her first match, then won a tough third set tiebreaker, 7-6(7-2), 6-0, against Long Island’s Dara Lahens.
At No. 1, Burton beat Houston’s Bryony Hunter in a 6-0, 6-3, match. She put up a tough fight, but lost her second match, 6-4, 7-5, to Stony Brook’s Katherine Hanson.
Other highlights to the weekend were Mathis’ 6-2, 6-3, win over Houston’s Elena Kazakova, and LaFortune’s victory over Long Island’s Taysha Blessington in a 6-3, 6-4 match.
Sept. 20, was devoted to a 1-1 doubles competition sponsored by former Harvard coach and collegiate tennis promoter, Ed Krass.
After a rough weekend, Cardenas came back and finished as the ‘C’ flight winner in this competition. Blaskovicova took the flight ‘B’ title, with Burton as the runner-up and flight ‘D’ was won by Wickline.
The Mountaineers will return to action Friday, Sept. 25-27 in West Point, N.Y., at the ECAC Army Invitational.
