GAME NOTES
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 7/9 West Virginia women’s soccer team plays host to Duquesne on Thursday, Sept. 3, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is schedule for 7 p.m.
The Mountaineers are working on a short week and Thursday’s game with the Dukes is their third match in six days for West Virginia: Penn State (Sat.), BYU (Mon.) and Duquesne (Thurs.).
WVU, 1-1-1 on the season, is led by all-BIG EAST forwards Blake Miller and Megan Mischler, All-American midfielder Carolyn Blank and defender Nicole Mailloux. Mischler and Blank were named preseason all-BIG EAST selections for 2009. Mailloux, a senior, is the lone returning starter along the Mountaineer back line.
Duquesne, led by third-year coach Tim Zundel, brings a record of 1-2-0 into tomorrow’s non-conference contest. Zundel has led his teams to an 18-14-4 record in his first two seasons.
The Dukes are led by junior goalkeeper Gabby Morrin, a 2009 Preseason all-Atlantic 10 selection. Morrin is coming off a season in which she led the A-10 in save percentage (.839) and finished third in goals against average (0.88). Through three matches this season, Morrin has logged all 273 minutes in goal, making nine saves while allowing three goals.
Leading the Dukes offensively is junior forward Samantha Kaiser. A 2007 Atlantic 10 all-Rookie Team pick, Kaiser leads the team in goals with two, scoring against Robert Morris and St. Francis (Pa.).
Duquesne is coming off a 3-0 shutout against Robert Morris on Aug. 30 at home.
West Virginia and Duquesne meet for the fifth time with WVU holding a 3-0-1 edge in the all-time series. The Mountaineers have won three straight over the Dukes since tying them in WVU’s inaugural 1996 season. WVU is a perfect 3-0 in matches played in Morgantown, including a 2-0 shutout in its last meeting in 2000.
